Defender Web Filter Category Block

This guide will show an administrator how to instate a web category block that will restrict access for end users on sites that fall within the classification criteria.

Defender Web Filter Category Block

  1. Navigate to the Web Content Filtering – Microsoft Defender portal, locate and select the policy you wish to alter. When selected configured settings for the policy will be displayed, select Edit to start the modification process.
  2. Upon opening the policy, all the information of the policy will be displayed. From the General section we will want to select Next to continue to the Blocked Categories section.
  3. From the Blocked Categories section, we will be able to select the desired web traffic categories that we wish to enforce a blocked access assignment to, this will prevent end users access to web sites that fall within these classifications.
  4. From the Scope section we will want to select Next to continue to the Summary section to verify that our category allowances have been properly configured.
  5. From the Summary section, verify that the previously selected category enforcements from the Blocked Categories section are generating in the list, if they are not select Back to traverse back to the Blocked Categories section and reconfigure the selection of the desired categories to create the proper block. If all the necessary modifications are properly generating, select Submit to finalize the web category block process.
