Enroll the Authenticator App for MFA

Need to set up multifactor authentication (MFA)? Add the Microsoft Authenticator app as a sign-in method in your security settings. Then, follow the on-screen prompts to complete the setup for your work or school account.

This guide will accomplish the following:

  • Registering the Authenticator App from My Sign-Ins

Registering the Authenticator App from My Sign-Ins

  1. Go to the MySignIns – Microsoft Look for the option to Add a sign-in method and select it. A prompt will appear to help you set up the Microsoft Authenticator app for your work account. Choose Microsoft Authenticator to continue.
  2. You'll see a prompt asking if you have the Microsoft Authenticator App installed on your phone. If you do, tap Next to continue. If not, install the app first, then proceed.
  3. You will set up the Microsoft Authenticator App for your work account. Tap Next to continue.
  4. When the QR code appears on the screen, take out your mobile phone and follow the steps below to continue.
  5. You’ll need the Microsoft Authenticator App for these steps. If you don’t have it yet, download it from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android).
  6. Tip for iOS users: If you can’t find the app but the App Store shows it as installed, tap Open in the store. You can also swipe right to find it in the App Library or swipe down on the home screen to use Search.
  7. Open the Microsoft Authenticator App and tap the + button to add your work account.
  8. Select Work or school account from the menu, then choose Scan QR code from the pop-up.
  9. Use your phone's camera to scan the QR code shown on your computer. Once the scan is successful, the new work account will appear in the Microsoft Authenticator App on your phone.
  10. After your work account appears in the Microsoft Authenticator App on your phone, tap Next to proceed.
  11. You will see a number on your screen. Open the Microsoft Authenticator App on your phone and enter this number in the provided field. Then, tap Yes to confirm and complete the verification process.
  12. After entering the number shown on your screen, you will receive an Approved message in the app. You will also see confirmation on your computer. Tap Next to complete the Microsoft Authenticator App setup.
  13. You should now see Microsoft Authenticator listed as a sign-in method. This confirms that multi-factor authentication (MFA) is set up for your work account. Going forward, you will receive mobile app notifications as your primary way to verify sign-ins.
